The entirety of this project was done remotely with my 2 teammates.
Arity is a digital innovation startup focused on collecting and analyzing enormous amounts of location and activity data from smartphones and telematics devices to make transportation smarter, safer and more useful.
Our challenge was to imagine new reasons for people to share their location and activity data in exchange for in-app experiences within the health and fitness space. We worked with client sponsors from Arity’s Product Design and User Experience organizations to concept, design and prototype mobile app experiences.
To better understand the problem landscape and current fitness app experience, we conducted a current state app assessment for the most popular fitness apps in the App store. We evaluated these each of their potential as a partner to Arity based on their features and how they use location data.
In addition, we also conducted 8 interviews of fitness app users to learn about their fitness routines, how the app plays a role in that, and opinions on sharing location data. Each interview lasted 45 minutes and included a screen sharing activity where the interviewee walked us through how they use their fitness app. From these, we identified 4 opportunity areas.
Industry App and User Research
Based on our user interviews and industry research synthesis, we decided to work within the app Strava. We were able to come up with several concepts to be incorporated into the app based on user needs identified.
We presented our concepts to Arity's team and based on their feedback, moved forward with the Safety Alerts concept. We built out wireframes for 3 different features and tested them with 10 users. Users provided feedback and ranked each of them. Beacon Plus ranked the highest, aligning with our insight from previous interviews that safety is a top priority for them.
Arity x Strava
Our final design features 2 main experiences: Conditions and Beacon+. Each utilizes Arity's location data and analytics capabilities to build experiences beneficial to the user. High fidelity, interactive prototypes were built using Figma and presented to Arity.
